Nominations now open for the 1st Dakilang Barangay Health Workers Awards
The 1st Dakilang BHW Awards is the first awards program to give honor and well-deserved recognition to the public service and community volunteerism given by our Philippine public health volunteers known commonly as Barangay Health Workers (BHWs).
Health volunteers, or BHWs, are the frontliners in primary health care services in any Philippine locality. They are often volunteers in community health centers that operate under the guidance of the Local Health Board (LHB) in accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Health (DOH). However, over the years, many of these hardworking BHWs are often under-recognized and not given the due recognition that they deserve for all the hard work and services that they render to their communities.
The Dakilang BHW Awards program seeks to provide due recognition to outstanding BHWs based in Metro Manila who have at least five years of active experience. The awards program is organized jointly by the Ateneo de Manila University-School of Government, the Kaya Natin! Movement of Good Governance and Ethical Leadership and the Office of Senator Teofisto Guingona III.
Nominees will undergo a screening process from which up to ten (10) finalists will be awarded a trophy and cash prize from the organizers in an awarding ceremony to be held in February 2013.
Any Filipino citizen or organization can nominate a BHW who is currently working in their community in Metro Manila using the application kit that can be found on http://www.kayanatin.org. They may also send an email to dakilangbhawards@gmail.com or call (02) 990-3282.
Nominations will be accepted until November 30, 2012.

The Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership together with MSD launched the Health Leaders for Mothers Program which aims to help decrease the maternal and infant mortality rate among women in Quezon City. The project is done together with SINAG, QC Rep. Bolet Banal and the Ateneo School of Government. This is another example of how good governance and leadership with integrity can lead to public-private partnerships towards the efficient delivery of basic services to marginalized communities in our country. Learn and discover effective and sustainable ways of solving some of our country’s most difficult social problems or simply creating a change in your own, little way. Join the 8th Social Entrepreneurship Training Program for Professionals every Saturday from 19 November 2011 to 24 March 2012, 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Ateneo School of Government, Fr. Ortiz Hall, Ateneo de Manila University, Loyola Heights, Quezon City.
Through lectures, discussions, and case studies of actual social enterprises, this program will have you introduced to the concept of social entrepreneurship as innovative means to solve social problems using entrepreneurial skills. The program will help you develop new and innovative social enterprise business plans that would improve or help solve basic needs and deliver basic services in the community. This program can help you practice good governance in your field and ultimately making a positive contribution in our society. Moreover, the program will also help you in developing ways by which you can earn profit while at the same time uplift the lives of the marginalized sectors of our country. Mentoring sessions with social enterprise experts will also be afforded as an opportunity to further improve your social enterprise business plan.
The main faculty member for this program will be Atty. Arnel Casanova, a Mason Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
Program fee is only P19,000.00 inclusive of a book on social entrepreneurship (HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD by David Bornstein), class materials, and a certificate of completion.
DISCOUNTS: Less 20% for those who register and complete their payment on or before 21 October 2011. A group discount of 10% is also offered to groups of 3 or more. Early bird groups will be given a 25% discount
Members of the academe, government and non-profit organizations can also be given a discount or a scholarship on a case to case basis.

The Ateneo School of Government and SEAOIL Philippines, Inc. will be implementing a 15-month leadership development and training program for local government officials all over the country. The said leadership program will focus on helping local government officials develop responsive basic education reform programs that are aimed at improving access and quality of basic education for their constituents.
As such, we are currently looking for a full-time Program Officer that will help in organizing, implementing and coordinating the aforementioned program. Minimum requirements are as follows:
A. College graduate
B. Must have experience in organizing training and/or formation programs
C. Must be willing to travel to different parts of the country
D. Must have good communication skills
E. Must be a team-player
F. Fresh graduates with substantial leadership experience are welcome to apply

MANILA, Philippines — One of the biggest challenges for our country in the coming years will be its ability to produce the next generation
of leaders who will be able to help propel our nation out of poverty and into lasting development.
Unlike other Asian tiger economies like China and Japan, the Philippines is very blessed to have a very young population wherein majority are aged under 40 years old. In the last elections we have already seen glimpses of the Filipino youth’s impact in our society, and if harnessed and trained properly, these young Filipinos will eventually decide the future of our country.
With these in mind, the Ateneo School of Government (ASOG) and the World Bank’s Knowledge for Development Center recently selected more than 50 Filipino young leaders who will take part in the inaugural Youth Leaders for Knowledge and Development program.
In this program, these young leaders, who are either college students or young professionals, will be given the unique chance to interact with accomplished leaders in our country.
During these so called “kapihan” sessions, the young leaders will get the chance to ask questions, raise issues and share insights with the current decision makers of our country.
Among those that are being lined up for them to interact with are Ramon Magsaysay Awardees such as DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo and Benjamin Abadiano of Assisi Foundation, as well as successful social entrepreneurs such as Fr. Xavier Alpasa, S.J., founder of Rags2Riches. Through these interactions, the organizers of the program hope that these young Filipino leaders will learn how it is to become effective, ethical and empowering leaders for our country.
Developing good leaders
During the launching of the program held last September 9, 2010 at the University of the Philippines’ Bahay ng Alumni, the World Bank’s Matthew Stephens congratulated the participants for being chosen among the hundreds who applied to be part of the program. Stephens cited the importance of developing good leaders in our country as a means towards making our current government institutions more responsive to the needs of the ordinary Filipinos.
He cited the experience of Naga City, wherein then Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo was able to curb corruption and transform Naga into the premiere city of the Bicol region. Stephens said that if many of our local government leaders were like Robredo, then our country would be able to easily become one of the leading countries in Asia.
To give the keynote address to the participants, the organizers invited another Ramon Magsaysay Awardee, former Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca. Padaca exhorted the participants to go out of their way to help promote good governance in our country. She also shared her experience of going against all odds including that of defeating a 40 year old political dynasty just to be able to be of service to her fellow Isabelinos.
For those who may not know, Padaca was a victim of polio at an early age. She continues to need crutches just to be able to walk. During her six years as governor of the second largest province in the country in terms of land area, she shared that she was able to help increase the income of farmers in the province as well as help lead the\ fight to protect the Sierra Madre against illegal loggers.
Padaca also explained to the participants that there is an urgent need for them to continue to support and help good leaders in our country especially those who are currently in government. She shared that without the necessary support, these leaders may eventually be swallowed by the corrupt system and we will only be left with government leaders whose only interest is to enlarge their personal bank accounts.
To cap the event, the ASOG’s Dr. Antonio La Viña shared with the participants the importance of developing new ideas and innovative solutions to solving our current social problems. He cited the growing trend towards the use of technology as well as social networking sites in helping promote greater transparency and accountability in our government. Moreover, he emphasized the ASOG’s continued thrust towards developing a new generation of Filipino leaders who will bring about the necessary reforms that are needed in our country.
The first kapihan sessions for the participants will begin this coming October and will be held at the World Bank’s Knowledge for Development Center in Pasig City.
